I think I've wasted enough space on a few examples but look at the wording..and all recent headlines ..Are you catching my drift yet..?
I know that most of you 50’s women will be laughing sarcastically right now, followed by a few well chosen expletives spilling from your mouths as you hurriedly slurp your coffee on the way to the job you are too old and tired to do. Perhaps as you look at your rent arrears and wonder just whether you will still have a roof over your head a year from today.
As a northerner, my choice of words would be “What a pile of SH…!” but then I would weaken my article by resorting to nonintellectual language, so I will restrain my urge for plain speaking.
So to my subject today..
Have you noticed the glut of anti-elderly propaganda coming out since the WASPI campaigners and Back to Sixty started to increase their visibility? And more so since Back to 60 won the right to take the government to court?
Either the government is frantically grabbing everything they can to fill the gap their mismanagement of the NI fund will have when they finally have to pay us back what was taken from us by stealth, OR they have another, more sinister and important reason for putting us persistent pensioners under the psychological and financial cosh and their more worrying efforts recently to turn the younger generations, who we are trying to protect the future of, against us.
Instead of 1950’s women actually ‘going away’ as expected when Ian Duncan Smith so arrogantly and callously dismissed us with those memorable words “Ignore them, they will go away”. He wrongly assumed that, because of our age and upbringing in a society where we were still discriminated against and where we were expected to shut up or put up, that we would not have the strength to fight back. In doing so he waved the proverbial ‘red flag’ to 1950’s women and our watchword became ‘Not going away’.
What the perpetrators of ‘The Great State Pension Robbery’ (starting with Thatcher) did not foresee, was that this particular group of women who they had thought the most likely ‘easy target’, was on the cusp of the technological revolution. We had bought teenagers computers for Christmas presents in the 90’s, (I certainly did) and in doing so, we learned from our children.
Whilst the reliance on technology took away the ability for social discourse from the majority of our offspring. it gave us oldies additional powers. We learnt to research on line. We began to communicate with each other via facebook and now God forbid us ‘birds’ as we were referred to in our youth, have learned to tweet. ‘Pinning’ is no longer something to do when making our kids clothes. We are ‘Keyboard Warriors’ and relentless.
They were right to some extent. Some of us women have clearly been too indoctrinated by our upbringing to be vocal and out of the streets protesting, which is a great sadness, but don’t underestimate these women… For every one of us breaching the press barriers at Westminster waving anything symbolic and purple, Standing up in the Houses of Commons to protest on Budget Day and making the news (when the BBC deems us newsworthy) For every one of these women, there are a thousand more 1950’s women at home and very angry. These women are part of the army of keyboards warriors who are fighting for us and we for them. They are researching about how the law works and about what goes on in parliament. The hypocrisy, the half truths, the waste and incompetence and more importantly, they are checking the historic budgets and the national insurance funds records and government reports and they are sharing their findings, which makes them dangerous because of what they may just turn up
Even more, they are being a real nuisance by daring to actively pursue formal DWP complaints and writing letters to MP’s, all of which expect an answer. How dare the plebs stand up and oppose? Well we dare, get used to it!
These women have to work… many cannot afford the train fares to London to protest, or are simply too ill to be there alongside us more fortunate ones. Others have caring responsibilities for either parents or grandchildren and these women, along with the more active campaigners , are sharing.. learning.. seeking truth.. and because of that, we have now become a threat to the pedlars of lies and spin.
For every women currently standing outside theatres to challenge the hypocrisy of false profits, who are adding to their already full coffers and massaging their inflated ego’s by doing the speaker trail. For every woman standing ‘Shoulder to Shoulder’ on street corners every Saturday with men, who are now joining their numbers as the realisation dawns that we are all affected by this. That there is actually a far bigger issue than just us 1950’s women’s stolen pensions. For every one, there are ten thousand more.
Tens of thousands more who are just realising what has happened to them and they are waking to the horror of their stolen pensions and its catastrophic affect on their own lives and the knock on affect to their children's welfare and financial future. To these women I say join us, we are many, but only in total unity will we win. Join your local pensions injustice group, it really doesn't matter which group and get the information to fight back. Do whatever is needed to bring this wave of outrage to its crest by June 5th and the Judicial Review and share, share, share! Wear your purple with pride and tell your family and anyone who will listen what is being done to them right now. The National Insurance Fund is for all our futures.
Knowledge is power so learn what they have done to you!
So rant over.. now look again at the recent spate of multiple financial and propaganda attacks from the government upon the over 60’s again and ask yourself why? Is it purely to plug the financial gap they have created by their previous incompetence and self interest. Or is it because we are uncovering the truth of why all of us men and women are being told we can't retire at 60 after a life of hard work with a decent pension. If we all had the truth we would all be questioning the pittance they have allowed us from our own contributions. Yet still we have one of the worst pensions in Europe, whilst they tell us how fortunate we are to have increased pensions.
More importantly.. Ask yourself where the 400 Billion went over the last 24 years that would have given us the investment return to fund us properly in later life? Including social care, bus passes and benefits that don't reduce you to a choice of whether to eat or heat?
Then ask yourself what’s really at stake for these charlatans?
